Tibetan Medicine

An Introduction to History, Philosophy, Healing Methods and Cures

The over 2000 year-old system of Tibetan medicine ranks among the most valuable and at the same time most threatened treasures of human culture. Only few people these days understand the background of this practice as well as its everyday use in all its depths. Based on the several thousand year-old shamanic Bon tradition, Tibetan medicine was influenced over the centuries by the knowledge of Egyptian Greek, Arabic, Indian and Chinese medicine and ultimately got refined by Buddhism in a unique way. By combining small doses of highly active healing plants and minerals some preparations reach an extraordinary healing effect, especially with degenerative diseases (heart, liver and kidney pains, diabetes, arthritis as well as some types of cancer in their early stage). Therefore it is an urgent duty for mankind as a whole to preserve and safeguard this knowledge.

The book, communicated for the first time in a Western language by a lecturer of the Dalai Lama’s College of Medicine, offers a systematic overview of Tibetan medicine. The first part of the book discusses the history of Tibetan medicine and its relationship with Buddhism. The second part is dedicated to the healthy body; development, functions and decay of the human body are depicted from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective. The third part focuses on illnesses, their causes and cures.
Featuring a number of large, high-quality photographs, among others medicinal Thankgas from the museum of the „Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute“ in Dharamsala, which are being published for the first time ever.
